The heavy rains and the melting snow in Kazakhstan broke the dam of the Kyzyl-Agash reservoir in Alma-Ata region. The flood that followed washed around 60 homes and at least 20 people are confirmed to have drowned. The people are being evacuated from the area and the rail and the road traffic has been brought to a halt in the affected areas. The President of the country, Nursultan Nazarbayev, ordered a government commission to be set up which would take care of the clearing up operations.
