A key Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, which is an important step forward in the Indo-US nuclear deal, is scheduled to be presented in the Lower House (Lok Sabha) today. The bill will limit the compensation a foreign company (or domestic operator) will pay in case of a nuclear disaster to just Rs3000 million.
Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member Sitaram Yechury said his party would oppose the bill. He said, “At the introduction itself we will oppose unless the government assures us that it would be sent to a Parliamentary Standing Committee.” BJP is also not agreeing on the limit of Rs3000 million. The government wishes to get the bill passed in the current budget session.
