Three New Variants From Volvo

Volvo on Wednesday launched cheaper variants of its three luxury cars, equipped with new diesel engine, promising better performance and fuel economy.

“We have introduced the three variants with new D3 diesel engine. In the light of changing customer and market dynamics, we have launched our most successful global models in India in the last two years,” Volvo Auto India Managing Director Tomas Ernberg told journalists here.

The new variants are sedans S60 and S80 with introductory price tags between Rs.23.20 lakh and Rs.33.90 lakh, while sports utility vehicle XC60 comes in two models at Rs.33.20 lakh and Rs.35.90 lakh.

All these models will be sold as completely built units (CBU).

“We are targeting 15 per cent share of the India’s luxury segment by 2020 with sales of over 20,000 units a year. In 2011, we had sold 320 units, while this year we are aiming to sell 800 units,” Mr. Ernberg added.

In India, the luxury car market is dominated by three German firms — BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

Talking about the new 5-cyliner turbo D3 diesel engine, Mr. Ernberg said it deliverd 163 hp power and best-in-class mileage of S60, S80 and XC60 will deliver mileage of 18.5 km a litre (in case of sedan S60), 17.8 km a litre (S80) and 14.7 km a litre (XCC60).

“The new engine will offer greater driving pleasure across the range…it gives us power to deliver more at less. Every car in the D3 range has been designed to deliver an overarching promise of being a world full of performance, luxury, sophistication and Scandinavian style,” he added.
