The government railway police (GRP) on Wednesday arrested a man in Mumbai on suspicion of throwing acid on a girl at Goregaon railway station on Tuesday.

The police claimed that the arrested youth, Pintu Shaikh, approached the victim, Aarti Thakur, while she was standing at the station and threw acid on her.
Aarti had named Pintu, an employee with an IT company, as the suspect. The incident was captured by the CCTV cameras at the station.
People present at the station at the time of the incident rushed to help the girl. She has suffered 15 per cent burns on her face and neck and has been undergoing treatment in a city hospital.
“I heard a boy threw acid on a girl. I did not see anything but I heard her scream and people were splashing water on her,” said an eyewitness.
It was not the first time that Aarti had been attacked. Last year she was attacked with a razor on two occasions. Police said there were strong reasons to believe it was a case of spurned love.
“The girl did not see the boy. It is not life-threatening. She has 10 to 15 per cent burn injuries on neck and hand,” said a police officer who has looking into the matter.
